Rio Nuevo and the Origins of Tucson

What makes a place special? It is a simple question, but there are no simple answers. Tucson's rich past is one of the things that makes our community unique. The Rio Nuevo Project will highlight our city's culture, history, and traditions.

Surprisingly, some of the places most important to the history of Tucson are the least understood. Before construction begins on Rio Nuevo, we need to know more about the origins of Tucson.

The City of Tucson hired Desert Archaeology, Inc. to conduct archaeological research within the core areas of the Rio Nuevo District. The information obtained will provide a firm basis for interpreting Tucson's past. In addition, archaeological investigations will help plan for preserving some of Tucson's fragile archaeological remains.

Archaeological excavations in four areas will take place over the next two years (See Map Below). This website will document the excavations as they happen. Watch for interesting artifact photos, field notes, and project reports. Historical documents will also be made available.
